Fun Facts About Rabbits
You love them, you adore them, but do you know these awesome facts about rabbits?
- When a rabbit feels happy, they do the cutest thing ever – they “binky”! This means they spin around as they hop in the air. See it in action here or here.
- Despite what Bugs Bunny or the Easter Bunny might tell you, rabbits can’t live on carrots. Carrots are actually high in sugar, putting them at risk for vet visits if you give them too many. But don’t worry – the occasional carrot snack is fine.
- Female bunnies are called “does,” baby bunnies are called “kits,” and male bunnies are called “bucks.”
- They eat poop. Yep, you read that right. Rabbits munch on their droppings to get the nutrients they need to stay healthy. It’s gross, but, hey, it works.
- Unlike humans but like horses and rats, these cuddly creatures can’t vomit.
- In 1961, Mel Blanc (the voice behind Bugs Bunny) got into an accident and quickly fell into a coma. A few weeks later, Blanc’s doctor tried to interact with him by asking “Bugs Bunny, how are you doing today?” The injured man managed to respond with “What’s up, Doc?” in Bugs’ voice. It’s said this may have saved Blanc’s life and put him on the road to recovery.
- Rabbits can learn to use a litter box, just like the cats in your family. And guess what? They can purr, too (actually, they chatter their teeth so it sounds like they’re purring, but it’s still darn adorable).
- If you think you can sneak up on a rabbit, think again – these wily guys can see behind themselves. That’s because they have almost 360-degree vision. They can also see above their head without moving. Cool, right?
- According to Guinness World Records, the highest recorded jump ever made by a rabbit was 39.2 inches.
- 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made every year, much to the delight of children and candy lovers. But you can’t eat them any old way – 89% of Americans say you should munch on the ears first!
- Rabbit teeth are always growing. In fact, if left alone, those teeth can grow at a rate of 3-5 inches a year. If you have a rabbit, make sure they chew on lots of things that will keep those chompers nice and short (hay and twigs work great).
